  • Abstract: ument which has been developed to enable the severity of a Scratch on the surface of an optical component to be assessed objectively is described. Based on a laser scan system, the instrument output is in the form of a digital display which classifies a particular Scratch in one of 19 categories according to severity. Tests have shown that the gauge can reliably measure Scratches that are only just visible to a trained inspector.
